I’ve been cutting and uploading the tube versions for the FakeHub sites on Pornhub for 15 years, and I’ve learned one simple truth: the thumbnail does more work than the first 30 seconds of the video. If the thumbnail doesn’t stop the scroll, nothing else matters.
Most people overthink it. They try to show the whole scene, add too much text, or pick a frame that looks good on a big monitor but dies at thumbnail size. Here’s what actually works when you’re making thumbnails in Photoshop for Pornhub.
The Face and the Body Both Have to Be Clear
Pornhub viewers decide in a fraction of a second. The thumbnail needs a readable face and a clear reason to click. On the Fake Taxi and Public Agent videos I cut, the strongest thumbnails almost always show the girl’s face looking at the camera or reacting, plus enough body that you instantly understand what kind of video it is. If the face is too small or the body is cropped so hard you can’t tell what’s happening, the click rate drops.
I usually start by finding 3–4 candidate frames from the best-looking parts of the scene. Then I drop them into Photoshop and quickly test which one still reads when I zoom the canvas way out. If it only looks good at full size, it won’t work as a thumbnail.
Keep the Text Short and High Contrast
A lot of creators write long titles on the thumbnail. Don’t. Two or three words maximum, and only if they add something the image doesn’t already say. On the FakeHub tube versions I usually skip text altogether unless the video has a very specific hook that isn’t obvious from the picture.
When I do use text, it’s bold, white or yellow, with a strong black outline or drop shadow so it survives the compression. I place it in the upper or lower third so it doesn’t cover the face or the main action. If the text fights the image, I delete it.
Colour and Contrast Matter More Than You Think
Pornhub compresses thumbnails hard. Flat lighting and muddy colours disappear. I push the contrast and saturation a bit in Photoshop so the image still pops after Pornhub has done its thing. Skin tones stay natural enough that it doesn’t look fake, but the overall image needs to stand out in a grid of other videos.
Bright clothing, a clear background, or a strong light source behind the subject all help. Dark, low-contrast frames almost always underperform.
Test the Crop
I build the thumbnail at the correct Pornhub aspect ratio from the start rather than cropping later. The face needs to stay big enough, and the most important part of the body shouldn’t be cut off by the edge of the frame. On a lot of the Fake Taxi videos the best frame has the girl leaning into the camera in the back of the cab — that composition almost always beats a wider shot of the whole scene.
Final Check Before Upload
Before I export, I do three quick checks:
- Does the face read clearly at small size?
- Can you tell what kind of video it is in under a second?
- Does anything important get cut off or covered?
If the answer to any of those is no, I go back and try a different frame. After 15 years of making the thumbnails for Fake Taxi, Female Fake Taxi, Fake Driving School and Public Agent, the pattern is consistent: simple, high-contrast, face-forward thumbnails outperform clever ones almost every time.
If you’re uploading to Pornhub and your current thumbnails aren’t performing, the fix is usually one of the points above. Get the face clear, keep it simple, and make sure it still looks good when it’s tiny.
